Where Should Your Small Area Rugs Be Placed?

Small Area Rugs, especially in smaller rooms, are an important design element that adds texture, color, and personality to your space.

In the Living Room:

The rules for selecting a Small Area Rugs size in the living room are similar to those in the bedroom, but there are a few exceptions.

The first option is to place all furniture legs on the Small Area Rugs, including the sofas and accent chairs. The rug should extend at least six inches past each piece of furniture in this arrangement. A 9-by-12-foot rug or larger is ideal for this option.

The second option is for those who have a limited amount of space. You can also choose to have only the front legs of the furniture on the Small Area Rugs, with the back legs on the surrounding floor, if you have a smaller space. This is particularly useful if a sofa is against a wall or if you want the rug to function as an area rug rather than a glorified wall-to-wall carpet.

In the Bedroom:

The first option is to place all of the bed's legs and surrounding furniture on the Small Area Rugs, such as nightstands and a bench at the foot of the bed. You should leave 18 to 24 inches of space around the outer edges of the furniture if you choose this option.

The second option is to put the rug under two-thirds of the bed. That is to say, the rug should begin slightly in front of your nightstands. The rug should be 18 to 24 inches long on each side of the bed in this case (including the foot of the bed). Consider an 8-by-10-foot rug for a queen bed and a 9-by-12-foot rug for a king bed for this layout. If you have a deeper piece of furniture at the foot of your bed, such as a small sofa or settee, this layout can also work.

In the Dining Room:

When choosing a rug for the dining room, there is one simple rule to follow: Make sure that the rug extends 36 inches beyond all sides of the table so that all chairs can sit comfortably on it (and no less than 24 inches). Both rectangular and round Small Area Rugs fall into this category.

To be sure you're getting the right Small Area Rugs size for your dining room table, add at least 60 inches to the length and width of your table. A 40-by-60-inch table, for example, should be paired with at least an 8-by-10-foot rug, but a 9-by-12-foot rug would be ideal. Add at least 60 inches to the diameter of round tables.
